Analysing data is one of the most reliable ways for any business to make strategic decisions. Commercial cleaning companies like us also leverage data to understand the strengths & weaknesses of the business and analyse trends using AI to make decisions and apply adjustments to cleaning services.

Analysing which sectors and industries have the highest demand for commercial cleaning services and realising our share in providing service to them allows us to, first, focus on providing better service to high-demand sectors and, second, approach other sectors.

In this case study, we conducted research to understand which sectors have the highest share in our portfolio and which sectors we should target to expand our cleaning operations in London.

How Did We Conduct This Research?

As a commercial cleaning company with over 20 years of experience in providing robust cleaning solutions to over 350 clients all over London, we have access to a wide range of services and clients’ data. We leveraged this data to conduct an analysis.

First, we divided the data by 5 main sectors:

  1. Office Cleaning (Corporate Sector)
  2. School & Nursery Cleaning (Education Sector)
  3. Retail Cleaning (Retail Sector)
  4. Communal Area Cleaning (Residential & Housing Sector)
  5. Healthcare Cleaning (Healthcare Sector)

We also added a category to represent “Other Sectors”, which includes:

  • Hotel Cleaning (Hospitality Sector)
  • Venue Cleaning (Event Sector)
  • Cinema & Theatre Cleaning (Leisure Sector)
  • Charity Cleaning (Non-Profit Sector)
  • Place of Worship Cleaning (Religion Sector)

Second, we conducted a cross-analysis between sectors and revenue.

The result indicates the share of each sector in our portfolio in terms of cash flow. Therefore, we can understand which sectors have a higher demand for commercial cleaning services.

This is followed by communal area cleaning for residential estates and housing associations, and cleaning services for the retail sector.

Other sectors also include categories that are vital for our portfolio diversification. They are a smaller part of our workload and cleaning operations compared to the main sectors, but they are still a part of the data we use to make decisions.

Venue cleaning takes the lead with 41.3% due to the diverse businesses that are operating under the event sector. We provide cleaning for multiple venues in London, including museums, libraries, art galleries and some public venues.

Venue cleaning is followed by cleaning services for charities and non-profits at 29.1%, which is one of the services we provide at a reduced rate to fit charities’ budget constraints.

Next is hotel cleaning and housekeeping, which holds 17.6% of our portfolio. We provide a wide range of cleaning and support services to hotels, B&Bs and other establishments in the hospitality sector. The most popular service among hotels is fully managed cleaning and housekeeping services.

And last are cleaning for cinemas and theatres (8.4%) and cleaning churches, synagogues and mosques (3.5%).

How Will We Apply These Data?

Data like this, as simple as it seems, is crucial for important and strategic decisions. By looking at the data and conducting further cross-analysis with other datasets we hold about our services and operations, we can make several effective short-term and long-term decisions.

Let’s explore the two main decisions we made based on the results.

#1 Service Adjustment & Improvement

We cross-analysed the results of this research with our service data. Our service data includes:

  • The size of the premises
  • Cleaning frequency
  • Frequency of ordering cleaning supplies
  • etc.

The analysis results help us to improve our cleaning services for the main sectors by optimising the operations and cleaning, tweaking the cleaning checklist and implementing sustainability and green cleaning practices.

By making these adjustments to our services, we will be able to:

  • Provide an even better cleaning service.
  • Reduce cleaning supplies costs that affect the contract.
  • Ensure our clients can reach their sustainability and environmental goals.

#2 Expanding Operations to Other Sectors

Another decision is to expand our cleaning operations to sectors that either we haven’t targeted effectively before or don’t generally outsource cleaning services.

Based on what we have in our current portfolio, we make several changes and run new marketing campaigns to reach out to businesses and establishments in the healthcare sector, leisure sector and hospitality sector.

While these sectors traditionally hire in-house cleaners, with our managed services, they can benefit from higher cleaning standards without the hassles of staff and service management.
