How to Clean Office HVAC Air Ducts [3-Steps]

While cleaning and the maintenance of HVAC air ducts is a difficult job, there are certain levels of cleaning you can do yourself. Some of the benefits of doing it yourself are expanding the lifespan of the HVAC unit and reducing maintenance and service costs.

Following is an easy 3-step process to clean the home or office HVAC air ducts.

Step 1: Preparation

First of all, get the tools you need:

  • High-powered vacuum cleaning (common household vacuum cleaners aren’t powerful enough so it’s better to rent a heavy-duty one.)
  • Screwdriver
  • Microfibre cloths and paper towels
  • Stiff bristle brush
  • Spong and scrubber
  • Personal protective equipment such as rubber gloves, gas masks (or general face masks) and safety glasses.
  • New filter for HVAC & furnace unit

We recommend opening all the windows before starting to ensure there’s good ventilation in the room you’re working in. It might get a bit dusty and ventilation helps. Covering sensitive electronics and soft upholstery can also prevent them from getting dusty during the cleaning process. Also, it is recommended to clean air ducts before deep cleaning or full general cleaning of the office or house.

Now, turn off the HVAC furnace and set it to “Fan Only” mode. If your unit doesn’t have “Fan Only” mode, then set it to heating mode. remove the screws of the supply vent and cover the other air vents with paper towels.

Step 2: Ducts & Vent Registers

In the second step, use the brush head of the vacuum cleaner and scrub the ducts to loosen all the dust and grime buildup while capturing them with the vacuum cleaner. Try to reach as far inside the duct as the vacuum hose allows.

When you’re done, use a mildly damped microfibre cloth to clean the air vent and register as well. Then, put the air vent back in its place and move to another supply vent to repeat this step. Don’t forget to cover the other vents with a paper towel to achieve maximum vacuum when cleaning.

Step 3: Change Filters

When you clean all air vents, it’s time to finish the job. Put all the air registers back and screw them in place.
